NewsAsia , 17 Feb 05 Singapore's recycling project on track: Yaacob Ibrahim By Pearl Forss SINGAPORE : Singapore still has some way to go before it can reach the recycling rate of countries like Canada. Still, Environment and Water Resources Minister Yaacob Ibrahim is optimistic - as the country is on track for its target. The current rates of industrial recycling rates are high, and household recycling rates are climbing above 50 percent. There is also a marked increase in environmental consciousness among students. Currently 50 percent of schools in Singapore have recycling corners. And at St. Margaret's Primary School, recycling is even incorporated into music lessons. The school's Primary One students made gongs, tambourines and other instruments out of trash. The school received a silver award from the National Environment Agency for its recycling efforts. Dr Yaacob Ibrahim said, "We will start with the schools. We are also working with communities so that we can actually close the loop, and we hope that we can sustain that consciousness building, so that one day Singaporeans will feel that we don't need to have campaigns, we don't need to have the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle). They can consciously do their part." - CNA links About the Singapore Environment Council's efforts on recycling Related articles on Reduce, reuse, recycle issues, policies |
