22 May (Tue): Walk on the Wild Side with Acres at the Singapore Art Museum

Acres will be having a booth at SAM to raise awareness on the illegal wildlife trade in Singapore, the cruelty in bear farming and other animal welfare issues. Acres will also be giving a short talk to children of ages 3 to 12 years old, followed by an interactive arts and crafts session.


Time: 10am - 5pm

22 May (Tue): The Biodiversity of Singapore Symposium II: Celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity & the Linnaeus Tercentenary

The theme for 2007 is "Biodiversity and Climate change".

The National Biodiversity Reference Centre, National Parks Board is pleased to support and co-host this event with the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, National University of Singapore. 10.00 am: "Reflections on Linnaeus, taxonomy and the Biodiversity of Singapore" by Prof. Peter Ng, RMBR 10.30 am: Tea Break buffet
11.00 am: "Adventures in Taxonomy," by A/Prof Benito Tan, Dr Adrian Loo & N. Sivasothi, RMBR.
12.00 noon: Symposium ends.

23 May (Wed): Raffles Museum events as part of International Museum Day 2007

Bus Tours from Jurong East MRT Station to Chinese Heritage Centre (NTU), Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research (NUS), NUS Museums (NUS). The bus Tour reaches Raffles Museum at: 11.00am 12.00pm 2.00pm 3.00pm.

The Raffles Museum Public Gallery Volunteer Guides will be conducting free guided tours for participants.

Learn how to make beautiful kimono design bookmarks and oft toys out of old t-shirts and towels.

26 May (Sat): Urban Butterfly Walk at Pasir Ris Nature Park
with Gan Cheong Weei

for NSS members only

Butterflies at Pasir Ris include mangrove species like the rare and gigantic, yet graceful King Crow; the common Blue Glassy Tiger, its close relative, the Dark Glassy Tiger; the seldom seen Plain Banded Awl Skipper; and many others. As it is near town, urban species like the Lime Butterfly and Striped Albatross can occasionally be seen. Please bring enough water to last three hours. Insect repellent will help make this walk more comfortable.

Main Bridge26 May (Sat): Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve free guided walk

You'll see the fabulous plants and animals of the mangroves and freshwater wetlands. Besides the abundant bird life, there is also other fascinating wildlife in the Reserve. more

PrawnWatch 9.30am: Get a hands-on introduction to traditional prawn farming and learn about the importance of mangroves.

Time: 9.30am for walk in guests, register at the Visitor Centre. Those coming with large groups are advised to pre-register.
Tour duration: one to one and a half hours. Easy trails, some suitable for young children.
Entry charges: $1 per adult, 50cents per child/student/senior citizen.

26 May (Sat): Free Evolution Garden Tour, Singapore Botanic Gardens

Journey through time with our volunteer guides in this one-hour tour. Bizarre plants, bubbling pools of hot lava and lots of other things you wouldn't expect to see in a botanic garden!

Time: 9am, register at Visitor Centre Time. Register 15 minutes before the tour. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis.

27 May (Sun): Dive Hantu with the Hantu Bloggers

Join the Hantu Blog for a unique and educational dive experience in our local waters. Discover what is truly, uniquely Singapore!

27 May (Sun): Nature Walk at Alexandra Hill with Goh Si Guim
for NSS members only

Alexandra Hill's winding roads, lush greenery and colonial buildings make for a relaxing stroll down memory lane, a time trip into a pre-war yesteryear. Come and discover what this off-the-beaten path oasis holds in its quiet embrace.

Time: 8am meet at the junction of Hyderabad and Alexandra Roads.

27 May (Sun): Free "Painting with Pui San" at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

Pui San welcomes artists of all ages or anyone who wants to learn. His objective is to encourage creativity while enjoying nature at the same time. Bring along your favourite drawing or painting supplies. More in the Art in the Wetlands blog.

Time: Meet 8.30am at the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve ticketing counter (Visitor Centre). Session usually lasts until about 11am.
Usual entry charges apply: $1 per adult, 50cents per child/student/senior citizen.
