Using seahorse science to advance marine conservation
Talk by Dr. Keith Martin-Smith Senior Programme Manager, Project
Seahorse, School of Zoology, University of Tasmania. About the talk
- Seahorses are powerful icons for marine conservation. They are
affected by diverse anthropogenic pressures, particularly overexploitation,
habitat destruction and incidental bycatch. Project Seahorse uses
quantitative science on the response of seahorses to these pressures
to develop innovative conservation solutions. Hosted by Dr Tan Heok
Hui, Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research.

(Thu): UV light key to jumping spider mating
cancelled
A Lunchtime Science Talk at NUS by Assoc Prof Li Daiqin Department
of Biological Sciences. Many animals can see into UV light, which
human cannot see, and use UV light for many functions. Here we describe
the courtship of an ornate species of jumping spider (Cosmophasis
umbratica) in which both sexes exploit ultraviolet coloration during
displays, but in quite different ways.

Feb (Sat): Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve free guided walk
You'll see the fabulous plants and animals of the mangroves and
freshwater wetlands. Besides the abundant bird life, there is also
other fascinating wildlife in the Reserve. more
3.30pm: Marine Fish Tour, a 30-minute tour introducing
the fascinating fishes of Buloh. cancelled
due to eve of Lunar New Year
Time:
9.30 am and 3.30pm for walk in guests, register at the Visitor Centre.
(10am and 4pm slots no longer available).
Those coming with large groups are advised to pre-register.
Tour duration: one to one and a half hours. Easy trails,
some suitable for young children.
Entry charges: $1 per adult, 50cents per child/student/senior
citizen.

National Orchid Garden Tour free guided walk
Explore the beauty and diversity of orchids at the Singapore Botanic
Gardens with volunteer guides in this one-hour tour. Please register
15 minutes before the tour. Registration is on a first-come-first-served
basis at the Visitor Centre. more

9am, 10am, 11am and 4pm. Register 15 mins beforehand at Visitor
Centre

Admission fees to the National Orchid Garden applies. Adults
- $5; Students - $1; Senior Citizens (Above 60 years) - $1; Children
(Below 12 years) free.
